A note on criteria: In general, a song will only appear on the “pop” lists—i.e. 1900-1959, 1960-1969, Country, etc.—if it was a single that charted (entered the Top 40 or Hot 100) on one of various charts maintained by Billboard or other organizations. There may be a few exceptions to this, but generally a song (or piece of music) that fits into one of the other categories (i.e. Broadway, Movies, etc.) and was not a charted single will appear on that list and not on the “pop” list. The chart position shown is the Billboard Hot 100 (except on the Country list) unless otherwise noted in parentheses. The chart position listed on the Country list is from the Billboard Country Chart. The lists that are perhaps least inclusive because I am least knowledgeable about the music from that sphere are the Songs from 1900-1959 and the Broadway Songs lists.

I defined a song as “pop” if it reached #20 on the Billboard Hot 100 or higher. After all, if a song was in the top 20, it received frequent airplay on “pop” stations and would’ve been well-known to radio listeners who never listened to specialized stations, such as country, easy listening, hard rock, etc.

Once I defined a song as “pop,” I only considered it for inclusion on the “pop” lists (1960-1969, etc.). Therefore, many songs that people might consider country, do not appear on either my “pop” or country lists. This is because they were too high on the Billboard Hot 100 to be considered country, and I did not like them enough to include them in my top 42 for the given decade.

Disney songs are of three types. They are songs that appeared in Disney films (live or animated), songs from Disney television series, or songs unique to Disney theme park attractions. Songs included on the Disney list were not considered for inclusion on the movie songs or the TV themes lists. Charted singles were, however, allowed to compete on the “pop” lists. Therefore, you will see some Disney songs on both lists.

This is not the case, however, for movie songs & TV themes. If I included a movie or TV song on one of the “pop” lists, then it did not compete with other movie or TV songs on those lists.

Conversely, if a movie song or TV theme was also a charted hit but did not appear on one on the “pop” lists or the country list, then I did allow it to compete for inclusion on the movie song or TV song list.

Furthermore, I did not consider crossover between the Broadway song & movie song lists. If a given song appears on the Broadway list, for example, then the corresponding song from the film version of the play was not considered for the movie list.

Because the Broadway versions are generally superior, that is where a Broadway song will generally be listed.

The available pool of patriotic songs is too small to preclude crossover from other lists (except the Disney list).
