You Only Live Twice

  • Tiger Tanaka’s ninja school was filmed at Himeji Castle, one of three Japanese fortresses built in the Edo period that still survive in their original forms. (Himeji Castle also appears in the 1980 television mini-series Shogun & the 2003 Tom Cruise film The Last Samurai.)
  • The film presents three alternative meanings of the phrase “you only live twice.” The first & most straightforward refers to Bond’s faked death at the beginning. Remarking on Bond’s apparent resurrection, Blofeld says, “You only live twice, Mr Bond.” The second interpretation is in the lyrics of the theme song, which says, “You only live twice—one life for yourself & one for your dreams.” The third & most speculative explanation is that the phrase may refer to Bond’s “second life” as a Japanese fisherman with a Japanese wife. Of these, only the last could possibly apply to the Fleming novel. In the novel, Bond writes the haiku, “You only live twice/Once when you’re born/And once when you look death in the face.” Also in the novel, Bond disguises himself as a Japanese fisherman, is believed dead, & loses his memory—thereby having two lives.
